Discover the secrets and stories of the Salt River wetlands. Creep down the boardwalk through the beating heart of the mangroves. Ride a silent electric barge for close-up glimpses of the birds, animals, and plants of this fascinating water world. Hear local guides’ stories about why it is such a good place to live.

The new Portland Bight Discovery Centre is your jumping o point for discovering Jamaica’s largest protected area. Guided by knowledgeable locals, connect with nature in interactive explorations of mangrove, forest and wetland ecology. Have fun learning from the Discovery Centre’s interpretative displays and presentations, dry forest nursery, river and turtle pond. At the dipping pond, kids can touch sea creatures such as urchins and anemones. Use binoculars to look for birds and wildlife from the Centre’s viewing tower. Take a walk along the 130 ft boardwalk through the wetlands and learn to identify four different types of mangroves. From the nearby bird hide, look out over the pond in search of the West Indian Whistling-duck, American crocodile and other wildlife. Putter quietly up the Salt River on an electric-powered barge to enjoy the sounds of nature, the majesty of the mangrove forests, and the clear water of the river and wildlife such as crabs, fish and crocodiles.
