Toolkits and manuals designed to support the development and improvement of community tourism enterprises in Jamaica

Community Tourism Toolkit

If you are thinking about starting a community tourism enterprise, start here!

In this Handbook, you will find introductory-level information about many things you need to know about running a sustainable and profitable community tourism business. You will not become an immediate expert in all areas but you will develop a good understanding of the key “building blocks of success” of a tourism business, and learn where and how to gain assistance when you might need it. You can quickly review what these main building blocks are by reviewing the handbook table of contents.

The guide is intended to be as comprehensive as possible. Take your time going through it, and then re-read the parts that are of real importance to you. Whether you are in a workshop or learning on your own, you will get the most out of this resource by reflecting on what you have learned, and completing the “fill-in-the-blanks” questions and prompts throughout.

TripAdvisor is one of the largest and most important travel review sites on the web. TripAdvisor features millions of reviews of hundreds of thousands of businesses around the world. It is often the first place that travelers turn when they are planning to travel to a destination. It is important that CTEs create, claim, and manage their TripAdvisor listings in order to monitor their online reputation, respond to traveler inquiries and reviews, and make sure that their contact information and images are accurate and up-to-date.  The following resources have been developed to help CTEs take advantage of all the free tools available from TripAdvisor.

The world's largest social media channel, Facebook has over a billion users around the world. It is one of the simplest and but most powerful resources that community tourism enterprises have to reach new audiences and to continue to engage past guests. We have compiled the following resources to assist CTEs to set up their Facebook business page and to manage the site to market their business and generate new bookings.

Airbnb is one of the largest and most popular of the so-called "sharing economy" platforms. Airbnb offers you someone’s home or small guesthouse as a place to stay, instead of large traditional hotels. On Airbnb, travelers can find places to stay with locals while traveling in Jamaica. If you want to rent out extra space in your own home or villa, you can host through Airbnb and make money for allowing a guest to stay the night. In 2018, Airbnb launched Airbnb Experiences. Airbnb Experiences are activities designed and led by inspiring locals. They go beyond typical tours or classes by immersing guests in each host's unique world. It's an opportunity for anyone to share their hobbies, skills, or expertise without needing an extra room.  The following resources are intended to help Jamaica's CTEs take advantage of Airbnb.
